Newlyn (Lulyn), population 4432 in the 2012 census is located in West Cornwall forming part of the shoreline of the north western corner of Mount’s Bay. It lies adjacent to the town of Penzance and forms part of it’s civil parish.

Newlyn was first recorded as Nulyn in 1279 and as Lulyn in 1290. The name is believed to be derived from the Cornish words ‘Lu’ meaning ‘fleet’ and ‘Lynn/Lydn’ meaning ‘pool’ thus translating as ‘pool for a fleet of boats’. It probably refers to the natural deep seawater anchorage between Newlyn and Mousehole known as Gwavas Lake. Many Newlyn fishermen use this area as a preferred landing site.

The principle industry is fishing, being home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the UK. Newlyn boasts over 40 acres of harbour with many types of fishing vessels such as Beam Trawlers, Long Liners and Crabbers. A wide variety of yachts and pleasure boats add to the scene.  Visit the Newlyn Harbour website for details of the facilities offered.

The area is a popular holiday destination with galleries, interesting old pubs and several restaurants to keep visitors entertained.

A useful Co-Op supermarket, newsagent, butcher, florist, baker, green-grocer and pharmacy satisfy day-to-day needs.  Nearby Penzance caters for more heavy duty shopping..
